What is Family Medicine?

Family Medicine is the specialty that takes care of the whole family.  In doing this, family physicians create a "Medical Home" for their patients.   Family Physicians take the time to get to know patients and their families.  By listening to their patients they help patients make the right healthcare decisions for their lives and situations.  Family Physicians consider physical, mental and emotional health together.  Your family physician will care for you throughout the stages of your life.  Family Physicians are trained in all areas of medicine and are specifically trained in preventive medicine.  They diagnose and treat a full range of problems, knowing when to treat conditions themselves and when it is time to get a specialist involved.

Family Physicians train for 3 years after medical school treating patients in the office, the hospital and at home.  The American Board of Family Practice has the most frequent recertification schedule and one of the most stringent medical education requirements of all specialites.
